Francis, a former four-year football letterman at the University of Southern Mississippi and track and field national indoor champion, competed in the light heavyweight class (176 to 198 pounds).

The second-place win in this national qualifying event will allow Francis to compete nationally, giving him the opportunity to win his professional bodybuilding card. Holding a professional bodybuilding card could mean that Francis eventually captures the attention of national sponsors who would make him a spokesperson for their company and representative of their brand.

Francis, owner of Better Fitness Nutrition Center located in Millbrook, has competed in more than 15 bodybuilding competitions in the past seven years, always placing in the top five of his class.

Preparing for a competition is year-round, requiring much dedication to an intense eating and weight lifting program during the off-season to grow muscle; and a reverse 16-week program of dieting, and combined cardiovascular and weight training to become lean, best reflecting the competitively built muscle.

Francis' next competition, the Alabama state championships, will be held in Birmingham on Aug. 28, where he will compete for the title of Mr. Alabama.
